IrishCarver Handmade products
Irishcarver started on a small, 30 square ft balcony in California, although I am from Ireland. My interest in Polynesian style jewelry and pendants stems from way back to my early surfing days as a 12 year old. I love the similarities between the Polynesian and Celtic cultures and designs.
I have always worn fish-hook style pendants but they were usually cheap, knock-off ones. It was all I could find. My interest and passion in these amazing and mythical hooks was really awoken when my beautiful wife bought me my first true makau. A truelly unique piece, hand made in Hawaii from Great Barracuda gill bone. This started, what has now become, a fantastic journey into learning the meanings and techniques used to make these treasures.
My carvings are made with the utmost care and attention, incorporating age old techniques and practices. I have acquired shaping and lashing techniques through friends, classes, books, internet and patience. My knowledge continues to grow, as does my skill. I am proud to have wearers of my art as far away as New Zealand.
